The Third Battle of Ypres — better known as Passchendaele — ran from July to November 1917 and cost the British and Commonwealth forces roughly 275,000 casualties for a territorial gain measured in miles. Field Marshal Haig's decision to press the offensive through the autumn mud became one of the most contested command decisions of the war, debated in British military history ever since.
Jersey issued this piece as part of a broader WWI centenary commemorative program. The gold-plated steel construction is worth noting: it places this firmly in the collector-souvenir category rather than bullion.
