The 2006 issue marks the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross, instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 following the Crimean War — a conflict that had exposed embarrassing gaps in how the British military recognized bravery across all ranks. Before the VC, gallantry awards were largely restricted by class and commission; the new decoration was explicitly open to any serviceman regardless of station, a radical democratic gesture for the Victorian military establishment.
The piedfort format — double the thickness of the standard circulation strike — has been a Royal Mint collector vehicle since the 1980s, with the extra silver mass making it the most substantial physical expression of this commemorative type.
