Reverse description The reverse presents a detailed artistic rendition of both faces of the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military decoration for valour. In the left foreground, the obverse of the medal is depicted in high relief, showing the characteristic Maltese cross with a lion passant guardant atop the royal crown at centre, surrounded by the circular scroll bearing the inscription 'FOR VALOUR'; the medal is suspended from its distinctive suspension bar by a ribbon. To the right, the reverse face of the medal is shown at an angle, its central circular boss inscribed with the date '29. JAN 1856.' marking the institution of the award. The abbreviation 'VC' appears prominently in the right field, with the denomination 'FIFTY PENCE' displayed in the lower portion of the design. The designer's monogram is visible in the lower left field.
