Obverse description Fifth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, crowned and wearing the George IV State Diadem, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The sovereign's name and royal titles appear as a continuous legend around the periphery of the field, with the date and designer's initials also present.

Reverse description The reverse depicts both faces of the Victoria Cross medal rendered in high relief. To the left, the obverse of the medal is shown suspended from its characteristic V-shaped bar and crimson ribbon suspender, displaying the crowned lion passant guardant above the Royal Cypher with the scroll inscribed FOR VALOUR beneath. To the right, the reverse of the medal is depicted in the form of a Maltese cross with a central circular medallion bearing the date of institution, 29 JAN 1856. The abbreviation VC appears prominently in the right field, with the denomination FIFTY PENCE inscribed in two lines along the lower exergue. The designer's signature appears at lower left.
