To the left, the obverse of the medal is shown suspended from its characteristic V-shaped bar and crimson ribbon suspender, displaying the crowned lion passant guardant above the Royal Cypher with the scroll inscribed FOR VALOUR beneath. To the right, the reverse of the medal is depicted in the form of a Maltese cross with a central circular medallion bearing the date of institution, 29 JAN 1856.
