Additional information

The Falkland Islands' decision to issue gold commemoratives marking the 50th anniversary of V.E. Day carried particular weight for this territory — the islands had been the site of a German naval defeat in December 1914, and the 1982 Argentine invasion meant that this population understood occupation and liberation in terms that were anything but abstract. London authorized the Falklands government to issue commemoratives through the 1980s and 90s partly as a soft assertion of British sovereignty following that conflict.

Fr#21 places this firmly in the Falklands gold series documented by Friedberg. The .917 fineness is standard crown gold, the same alloy used for sovereigns.
