One of a series of 29 Olympic and Paralympic sport 50 pence pieces released by the Royal Mint between 2011 and 2012 ahead of the London Games, the Triathlon issue appeared in both circulating cupro-nickel and this sterling silver collector version. The silver strikes were sold individually in presentation packaging at a premium, aimed squarely at the bullion gift market rather than numismatic collectors — mintage figures reflect that.
