Additional information

Squadron 617 — the "Dambusters" — carried out Operation Chastise on the night of 16–17 May 1943, breaching the Möhne and Eder dams using Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb. The raid killed 53 of the 133 aircrew who flew it. Guernsey's choice to commemorate this particular operation carries weight beyond the ceremonial: the island was under German occupation at the time of the raid, and its liberation was still two years away.
