| Additional information |
The Southern Rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) has an outsized connection to the Falklands — the islands host one of the largest breeding populations in the world, though numbers have dropped sharply since the mid-20th century, with some colonies losing over 90% of their birds. The cause remains disputed: shifting prey availability, commercial fishing pressure, and climate-driven changes to ocean currents are all implicated.
KM#197.1 distinguishes this from a concurrent bimetallic issue in the same wildlife series, both circulating simultaneously.
