Reverse description The reverse presents a full-colour printed central medallion depicting two Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft of the Royal Air Force in low-level flight over an expanse of sea crowded with naval vessels, evoking a Second World War operational scene. The Spitfires display distinctive RAF roundels on their wings and black-and-white invasion stripes on their fuselages, rendered with vivid chromatic detail against a pale sky. The raised legend 'ROYAL AIR FORCE CENTENARY' arcs in bold capitals around the upper border of the gold-plated rim, while the commemorative dates '1918 - 2018' are inscribed along the lower border, marking the centenary of the RAF's founding. The central coloured scene is framed by a wide, plain gold-plated annular border that separates the design from the milled edge. The reverse was engraved by Trevor Mitchell.
