The Red Dragon of Wales entered the Royal Arms as an official heraldic supporter in 1953, added by royal proclamation at Elizabeth II's accession specifically to acknowledge Welsh national identity — it had been absent from the arms since the Tudors. This 2021 issue belongs to the Queen's Beasts series, which drew on the ten heraldic figures present at the 1953 coronation in Westminster Abbey. The dragon was the final beast released in the bullion programme before the series closed.
