Additional information

Guernsey's position in the Channel Islands made it uniquely unsuited to issue this particular commemorative — the island was under German occupation from June 1940 until May 1945, the entire span of the RAF's wartime operations being celebrated here. The occupying forces requisitioned local coinage and disrupted the currency system entirely, making the irony of a Guernsey-issued RAF tribute quietly pointed.

Gold-plated copper issues of this type were produced in large numbers for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation.
