Gibraltar's commemorative 50 pence program has long operated as a commercial licensing exercise rather than a conventional currency issue, and this piece is squarely in that tradition. The selective gold ink application — a printing process bonded to the coin's surface post-striking — was introduced to the series as a premium variant, with the base type sharing the same dies as the standard cupro-nickel issue.
Elizabeth II turned 95 in April 2021, nine months before her death at 96. She remained head of state for Gibraltar throughout, a constitutional relationship dating to the territory's formal cession under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.
