Struck to mark the 70th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip — the first British royal couple to reach a platinum anniversary — this piece was issued by the Isle of Man, which has long exploited its Crown dependency status to produce commemorative coinage outside the constraints of the Royal Mint's licensing agreements. The 2017 platinum anniversary series appeared across multiple formats and metals, with the gold proof among the more limited productions.
Philip died in April 2021, making this among the last commemoratives to celebrate the marriage during his lifetime.
