The Isle of Man's Odin's Raven issues of 1980 commemorated the replica longship voyage that year from Trondheim to the island, retracing a Norse route tied to the Mann's Viking settlement history. The gold proof version, struck in 22-carat gold at a weight placing it well above a standard sovereign, was produced in extremely limited numbers by the Pobjoy Mint — the private Surrey-based firm that held the Isle of Man contract and was known for aggressive proof programs targeting collectors rather than circulation.
Pobjoy's relationship with the Isle of Man government from the late 1970s onward generated an unusual density of commemorative issues for such a small jurisdiction.
