Reverse description A detailed depiction of the tall ship DA Moltke under full sail, rendered in high relief, showing the vessel navigating choppy seas with all sails billowing. The numeral '50' appears in the upper left field, and the inscription 'MOLTKE' is positioned along the lower margin in a straight legend. The intricate rigging, bowsprit, and hull detail of the square-rigged sailing ship are finely engraved, evoking the vessel's historic voyages to the South Georgia region.

Additional information

The SMS Moltke was a German battlecruiser that saw action at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, surviving torpedo hits that would have sunk lesser-armored vessels. This Pobjoy Mint issue is struck for one of the British Overseas Territories — almost certainly the Isle of Man or a similar dependency — under a licensing arrangement that has made Pobjoy one of the most prolific producers of commemorative 50 pence pieces since the 1970s. The "Diamond Finish" designation refers to a specific die-polishing technique applied to circulation-style blanks to achieve a proof-like surface without full mirror fields.
