Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem and the Victorian Coronation Necklace, rendered in a crowned portrait style. The legend arcs around the periphery of the heptagonal flan, with the date appearing below the portrait. The design follows the standard definitive portrait used on Isle of Man coinage for the period.

Additional information

The Isle of Man has long issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with a frequency that borders on aggressive, but this particular piece — marking Prince Philip's connection to the island — gains retrospective weight from his death in April 2021. Philip held the title Duke of Edinburgh from 1947 until his death at 99, the longest anyone has held that title. The "1990's" attribution in the name almost certainly references a prior issue this design draws from, reissued in his final year.
