HMS Resolution was the vessel that carried James Cook on his second voyage of exploration (1772–1775), the expedition that definitively settled the question of a temperate southern continent — finding only ice where theorists had placed landmasses. Saint Helena's connection is direct: the island served as a resupply and rest point for returning Pacific voyages throughout the Age of Sail, and Cook himself called there.
KM#27a is the silver variant of a base-metal issue, struck for collector distribution rather than circulation. Saint Helena had no domestic mint; production was contracted to the Royal Mint.
