Additional information

HMS Resolution was the vessel that carried Captain James Cook on his second voyage of exploration (1772–1775), during which Cook became the first commander to cross the Antarctic Circle. Saint Helena served as a resupply and communications point for British naval expeditions operating in the South Atlantic, giving the island a direct logistical connection to the voyages this coin commemorates.

The 2002 date places this issue within a broader wave of commemorative fifty pence pieces produced by Saint Helena around the Golden Jubilee period, many struck by the Pobjoy Mint under contract.
