| Obverse description | Diademed and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, executed in high relief against a mirror-polished field, as designed by Jody Clark. The peripheral legend arcs around the upper portion reading 'ELIZABETH II · ASCENSION ISLAND', with the date '2022' continuing along the lower right, and the denomination 'FIFTY PENCE' inscribed along the base, all separated by raised dots. The engraver's initials appear discreetly below the truncation of the bust. |

Ascension Island has no indigenous population and functions primarily as a British Overseas Territory administered for military and communications purposes. Its coins are legal tender in name only — none circulate — making it a preferred vehicle for the Royal Mint and associated licensees issuing collectible commemoratives with British royal portraiture that wouldn't fit neatly under a UK or Crown Dependency issue.
Andersen published "The Princess and the Pea" in 1835 as part of his first fairy tale collection, drawing on a Danish folk tale he'd heard as a child.
