Obverse description The fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicted in right-facing profile wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The bust is draped and shows fine detail characteristic of the Rank-Broadley portrait introduced in 1998. The sovereign's name and royal titles appear in Latin legend around the periphery, with the date positioned to the right and the engraver's initials IRB truncated below the portrait.

Additional information

This piece commemorates Roger Bannister's sub-four-minute mile run at Oxford's Iffley Road track on May 6, 1954 — the fiftieth anniversary falling in 2004. Bannister completed the distance in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds, paced deliberately by Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway, making it as much a team effort as an individual achievement. His record stood for just 46 days before Australian John Landy broke it.

The extended date range reflects the Royal Mint's practice of issuing proof sets across multiple years from the same dies.
