Reverse description Two fully equipped fencers depicted in dynamic mid-bout action, their bodies intertwined in athletic engagement, occupying the majority of the heptagonal field. The official London 2012 Olympic Games logo, featuring stylised figures and the Olympic rings, appears prominently in the upper portion of the field above the athletes. The denomination 50 PENCE is inscribed in the lower exergue in capital letters. The design is the work of engraver Ruth Summerfield.

Additional information

Issued as part of the Royal Mint's London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games commemorative program, which ultimately ran to twenty-nine different fifty pence designs — the largest number of circulating and collector fifty pence types ever released for a single event. The fencing design was one of the more contentious in the series; the original version by artist David Sparks was withdrawn from circulation after complaints that the fencer's mask obscured the face, which some interpreted as a design flaw, though the piece was later reinstated.

The withdrawn version is now among the scarcest fifty pences in modern British coinage by recorded mintage.
