Reverse description The reverse, designed by John Mills to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944, presents a dynamic composition filling the entire heptagonal field. The upper portion depicts a dramatic aerial scene with multiple Allied aircraft — identifiable as Spitfires and other World War II fighter types — shown in flight, trailing vapour trails rendered as bold diagonal lines sweeping across the field. The lower register depicts a stylised view of the Normandy invasion beaches, with landing craft and naval vessels rendered in a graphic, linear style conveying the vast scale of the seaborne assault. The denomination 50 PENCE appears in the lower right field, with the engraver's initials JM incorporated at the lower centre below the waterline. The overall design employs a bold, semi-abstract graphic style characteristic of commemorative numismatic art.
