Additional information

Saint Helena issued this piece to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the 1953 Coronation, one of several small British territories that produced commemorative coinage for the jubilee. The island's dependency status meant its currency remained tied to the pound sterling at par, making local commemoratives more souvenir than circulating necessity.

KM#31 is among a handful of Saint Helena copper-nickel issues from this period that saw almost no actual circulation on the island, whose population at the time numbered fewer than 5,000.
