Gibraltar's Christmas 50 pence series, launched in 1988, was among the first recurring annual holiday-themed coin programs issued by a British Overseas Territory — a format the Royal Mint itself had not yet adopted for domestic coinage. The 1989 issue is the second in that run, struck at Pobjoy Mint under contract.
