Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after the portrait by Arnold Machin, depicting the Queen with an elaborate upswept coiffure and a small tiara crown, with a draped bust truncation. The circular legend around the periphery reads QUEEN ELIZABETH II · FALKLAND ISLANDS in the upper arc, with · 50 PENCE · inscribed along the lower arc. The design is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field.

Reverse description A three-masted sailing ship rendered in bold relief occupies the central field, its sails billowing and flags flying from each mast, commemorating 150 years of British administration of the Falkland Islands. The dates 1833 and 1983 flank the vessel at either side of the mid-field. The legend FALKLAND arcs across the upper periphery and ISLANDS curves along the lower periphery in large block letters, completing the commemorative inscription.
