| Reverse description | The classically composed figure of Britannia is depicted seated in right profile, holding a trident and shield in her right hand and extending an olive branch in her left. A lion couchant rests at her feet, symbolising British strength and sovereignty. The design, originally created by Christopher Ironside for the introduction of decimal coinage in 1969, is presented here to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 50 pence coin. The legend arches above the figure, the denomination appears below, and privy marks are positioned to the right of the denomination and on the rim. |
