Issued as part of the Royal Mint's London 2012 Paralympic Games commemorative program, this piece belongs to a fifty-coin sports series released across 2011 and 2012 — one of the largest themed commemorative programs the Mint had undertaken. Boccia, a precision ball sport developed specifically for athletes with severe physical impairments, was added to the Paralympic program in 1984. The silver versions of this series saw considerably lower uptake than their base-metal counterparts, which circulated widely enough that the full set became a minor national collecting phenomenon.
