The upper field is filled with a formation of wartime aircraft — depicting both RAF fighters and Luftwaffe bombers — rendered in low relief against a mirror-polished field, conveying the scale of the aerial campaign. In the lower register, three RAF aircrew in flying suits are depicted running across an airfield in scramble formation, with the silhouette of a Spitfire visible to the right.
