Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II·DEI·GRA·REG·FID·DEF·2015· J.C
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description The reverse, designed by Gary Breeze, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a dramatic two-register composition. The upper field is filled with a formation of wartime aircraft — depicting both RAF fighters and Luftwaffe bombers — rendered in low relief against a mirror-polished field, conveying the scale of the aerial campaign. In the lower register, three RAF aircrew in flying suits are depicted running across an airfield in scramble formation, with the silhouette of a Spitfire visible to the right. The inscriptions 'THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN' appear in bold block lettering across the centre of the field, with the commemorative date '1940' positioned in the exergue. The engraver's initials 'GB' are visible in the lower right field.
