The 2015 Battle of Britain 50p marks the 75th anniversary of the 1940 air campaign that ran from July through October, during which the RAF flew roughly 3,000 aircraft sorties in the peak weeks of fighting. Churchill's Commons speech of August 20th — delivered while the battle was still in progress — cemented the "Few" into permanent historical shorthand before the outcome was even decided.
The gold proof format uses 22-carat alloy, the same fineness the Royal Mint has applied to sovereign coinage since 1817.
