Alderney, the northernmost of the Channel Islands, was the only British territory to be entirely evacuated and then fully occupied by German forces during the war — a fact that gives its commemorative issues on this subject an uncomfortable irony few other issuers can claim. The island itself sits roughly 50 miles from the Spitfire and Hurricane bases that fought the battle being commemorated here.
Silver-plated copper-nickel is the base composition; the .999 designation refers only to the plating layer.
