| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, with a drop earring visible, engraved by Jody Clark as the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen on British coinage. The truncation of the bust is bare, and the designer's initials 'JC' appear at the base of the neck. The peripheral legend reads 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2020 ·', interrupted by bullet points and running continuously around the heptagonal flan. |

One of three dinosaur 50p pieces issued in 2020 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Geological Society of London's recognition of Gideon Mantell's discoveries, the Hylaeosaurus is easily the least celebrated of the trio — overshadowed by Iguanodon and Megalosaurus in public imagination despite being one of the three genera that gave Richard Owen the material to define Dinosauria in 1842.
