Reverse description The reverse design by Nigel Tudman and Jas Bhamra pays tribute to mathematician and computing pioneer Charles Babbage, styled to evoke the punch-card columns and mechanical registers of his celebrated Difference Engine. The name 'charles' appears in bold lower-case letters across the upper register, set against a background of vertical columns filled with short horizontal dashes evoking punched paper tape or mechanical calculation rods. Below, 'babbage' is rendered in large, bold lower-case type spanning the full width of the field. The numerals '2 1 2 2 1 7 5' appear in the lower register, referencing Babbage's birth date of 26 December 1791 in an encoded format, with the engraver's initials 'NT' inscribed at the bottom of the field.
