Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with a permanent civilian population of essentially zero, has no indigenous monetary tradition — its coinage exists entirely for the collector market. The 50th anniversary of the 1953 Coronation prompted a wave of issues across British territories, and Ascension was among the most prolific participants, releasing multiple metal variants of the same commemorative type simultaneously.
The gold version, struck to 22-carat standard, is the prestige tier of that release family.
