Additional information

The large-format 50 pence was already living on borrowed time by 1996. The Royal Mint had announced the downsizing of the coin — from 30mm to 27.3mm — as a cost-cutting measure, and circulation strikes in the old size ceased after 1997. These silver proofs, struck across those final two years, are therefore the last proof issues in the original dimensions that had defined the denomination since its introduction in 1969.

Spink reference H4 places this squarely within the collector-targeted piedfort and proof program rather than anything intended for commerce.
