Jersey's 50 pence issues are struck under the authority of the States of Jersey, which has maintained the right to issue its own coinage independently of the United Kingdom since the 19th century. This colourised circulation-format piece follows a long line of St George reverses on British-series coins, a design tradition traceable to Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 commission for the sovereign — a design he reportedly carved without ever having handled a live snake for reference.
