Reverse description The reverse features a centrally composed arrangement of six overlapping traditional Royal Maundy coins — denominated 1, 2, 3, and 4 pence — rendered with selective 24-carat gold gilding and adorned with individual wreath borders, evoking the historic Maundy money distributed by the sovereign at Easter. A small purse motif appears to the right of the coin grouping. The lower portion of the field bears the inscriptions ROYAL MAUNDY SERVICE and the denomination 50p in raised lettering, flanked on either side by fleur-de-lis ornaments. The upper field displays a fine hatched geometric pattern behind the gilded coins, creating a striking two-tone contrast between the silver-plated ground and the gold elements.

Additional information

The Royal Maundy Service is among the oldest surviving royal ceremonies in Britain, with roots traceable to medieval practice and codified by the 13th century. Maundy money itself has been struck in silver since the reign of Charles II, distributed annually by the sovereign to elderly recipients — one coin per year of the monarch's age — at a rotating cathedral. Charles III conducted his first Maundy Service as King at York Minster in April 2023.

This Isle of Man issue is a commemorative derivative, not legal tender used in the ceremony itself. Genuine Maundy sets are struck by the Royal Mint exclusively.
