Charles III's coronation on 6 May 2023 was the first such ceremony in seventy years, and the Isle of Man — a Crown Dependency with its own mint authority — moved quickly to issue commemorative coinage independent of Royal Mint output. The island has a long history of issuing its own legal tender distinct from mainland British coinage, a status it has exploited commercially since the 1970s when the Pobjoy Mint helped transform Manx numismatic output into a collector-focused industry.
The five-ounce format with selective gold plating is characteristic of modern Manx premium issues, where the technical specification does as much commercial work as the subject matter.
