Additional information

Part of the Royal Mint's ongoing Definitive Nature series, this issue marks the giant deer — Megaloceros giganteus — as one of the most recognizable megafauna of the British Pleistocene. The species died out across most of its range roughly 10,500 years ago, though an isolated Irish population survived until around 7,700 BP, well after humans had established themselves on the island.

The silver proof 50p format has become the Royal Mint's default vehicle for limited collector issues since the denomination's distinctive seven-sided shape was introduced in 1969.
