The "Digging for Victory" campaign began as a British government initiative in 1939, urging civilians to convert gardens, parks, and bomb sites into vegetable plots to offset wartime food shortages caused by German U-boat campaigns against Atlantic supply lines. Guernsey's relationship with that campaign carries a particular irony: the island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945, during which time islanders grew food not from patriotic choice but from necessity, under conditions of genuine hunger.
This 2025 commemorative links that history to the current reign.
