Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Beano character's debut in issue 452 of the comic on 17 July 1951, this coin continues the Royal Mint's long-running programme of circulating commemorative 50 pence pieces featuring British popular culture. Dennis first appeared without a name on that cover, created by cartoonist David Law, and the character has been continuously published since — one of the longest unbroken runs in British comics history. The Beano itself launched in 1938 and survived World War II paper rationing by temporarily merging with The Dandy.
