Additional information

The Castle of Mey, on the Caithness coast of northern Scotland, was purchased privately by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1952 — the same year her daughter acceded to the throne — after she reportedly resolved to have somewhere entirely her own following the death of George VI. She spent considerable sums restoring it from near-dereliction. Charles inherited the property on her death in 2002 and has maintained it as a working estate and charitable trust, making it the only royal residence with a direct line of personal ownership across two generations rather than Crown Estate administration.
