Additional information

Jersey has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with some regularity, but this particular release marks the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain — the summer air campaign of 1940 during which RAF Fighter Command, outnumbered and flying continuous sorties, held off the Luftwaffe long enough to make a German invasion of Britain logistically untenable. The "Spitfire Summer" designation refers specifically to the period between July and October 1940, though the Hawker Hurricane actually accounted for a greater share of German aircraft destroyed during the battle.
