| Additional information |
Eric Lock was the RAF's highest-scoring British-born ace of the Battle of Britain, claiming 26 kills before being shot down and severely wounded in November 1940. He returned to operational flying against medical advice and disappeared over the French coast in August 1941 — his aircraft and remains never recovered. Guernsey's interest in the campaign is not merely commemorative; the island was occupied by German forces from June 1940, making the RAF's failure to hold air superiority a lived consequence for its civilian population.
