The Anglo-Palestine Bank Limited was a commercial institution, not a central bank — yet it found itself issuing currency for the nascent State of Israel after the British Mandate collapsed in May 1948 and the Palestine pound became an immediate political liability. These notes were a stopgap, issued under emergency authorization while the Bank of Israel was being established and a new currency, the Israeli pound, prepared for introduction.

The 50-pound denomination was the highest in the series, and at that value saw little street circulation. The ABNC printing is characteristically fine, but the real interest here is juridical: notes of this type were legal tender under two successive governing authorities within their short window of issue.
