Issued to mark the centenary of Gandhi's birth in 1869, this was one of several commemorative denominations released simultaneously by the Reserve Bank — an unusually coordinated series for India at the time. The timing carried political weight: 1969 was also the year Indira Gandhi's government nationalized fourteen major commercial banks, and the state's control over monetary imagery was very much on the agenda.
