Additional information

The shift to copper-nickel for this issue came as part of India's broader post-decimalization rationalization of the coinage system, which had been restructured in 1957 but took well into the 1970s to fully stabilize metallurgically. The 1972–73 dates fall within a period of significant monetary pressure following the 1971 war with Pakistan and the economic strain of absorbing roughly ten million refugees from what became Bangladesh.
