Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — commonly known as Store Norske — was established in 1916 after Norwegian investors bought out the American Arctic Coal Company's Svalbard operations. These scrip notes were the practical consequence of running a coal mining settlement at 78° North, days from the nearest bank. Workers were paid in company currency redeemable only at the company store, a system as old as industrial extraction itself but unusually stark given the geography.

The SN11r designation indicates a remainder — unissued stock — which survives in greater numbers than genuinely circulated examples. Used copies show heavy handling consistent with pocket wear in arctic conditions.
