Zambia redenominated its currency in 2013, replacing the kwacha at a rate of 1,000 old kwacha to one new kwacha — effectively erasing three zeros that had accumulated through decades of inflation dating back to the 1980s copper price collapse. This 50 ngwee piece belongs to the first coinage series issued under the rebased kwacha, authorized by the Bank of Zambia Act of 2012.
