Dresden's municipal administration issued emergency Notgeld in 1918 as the imperial banking system buckled under wartime strain and small-denomination coinage all but vanished from circulation. Stadt Dresden was among the more prolific municipal issuers in Saxony, and at 50 Mark this note sits at the upper end of what most German cities dared to float on their own credit.

Kunstanstalt Schupp & Nierth was a local Dresden commercial printing house — not a security printer — which makes the physical integrity of surviving examples worth scrutiny. Municipal Notgeld of this type was never intended to outlast the armistice.
