Lithuania's 2003 Athens Olympics commemorative was issued a full year before the Games themselves — standard practice for collector series, but worth noting given Lithuania's particular investment in the 2004 return to Athens. The country had competed at the inaugural modern Games in 1896 only in the sense that some Lithuanian-born athletes competed under Russian imperial colors; formal independent Olympic participation didn't come until 1924, making each subsequent Games a point of genuine national distinction.
